[Med-EcoSuRe]: Research study on the impact of Micro-Grid Solar PV in Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture in Palestine

28 September, 2020

An Najah National University (Partner of the project) has recently published a research paper in the “Agronomy Journal” on the “Micro-Grid Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems for Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture in Palestine” as part of the Special Issue “Photovoltaics and Electrification in Agriculture”. Agronomy is monthly peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal with an impact factor of 2.603, and indexed in Scopus as a Q1 journal.

In this paper, Prof. Imad Ibrik, coordinator of Med-EcoSuRe project at An-Najah National University, discusses the impact of using micro-grid solar PV systems in rural areas in the West Bank, Palestine. The paper details two case studies from Palestine and shows the inter-relation between energy, water and food in rural areas to demonstrate how the availability of sustainable energy can ensure water availability, improve agricultural productivity and increase food security. Furthermore, the paper attempts to evaluate the technical and economic impacts of the application of nexus approaches to Palestine’s rural areas.

The results predict the long-term success of small, sustainable energy projects in developing rural areas in Palestine.

It is worth mentioning that this research was sponsored within the framework of Med-EcoSuRe funded by ENI CBC MED programme, under the thematic objective” Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation” (Project webpage).
