Med-EcoSuRe selected as a reference capitalization project to support the cost-effective energy rehabilitation of buildings

15 December, 2021

Med-EcoSuRe has been selected as a reference project, among others, within a newly funded project under the ENI CBC MED capitalization call, entitled  SEACAP 4 SDG (Med SE(A)CAP integration through uniform adapted assessment and financing methods, mainly targeting buildings in education and health sectors, for sustainable development goals in a smart society).

SEACAP 4 SDG addresses the common challenge of adapting to mitigation of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency of public buildings by integrating Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans (SE(A)CAP) via a uniform adapted assessment toolkit and an innovative financing methodology targeting a number of selected cities in the Mediterranean.

SEACAP 4 SDG will design and implement a new approach (financial mechanism) permitting local municipalities to design and implement energy efficiency investment measures in their public buildings, via an introduced toolkit based on selected reference projects’ outputs and outcomes. For instance, the project will capitalize on and reinforce the Living Lab (LL) methodologies developed within Med-EcoSuRe, as well as the tools developed and the ICT collaboration platform created.

The Mediterranean Renewable Energy Centre, coordinator of Med-EcoSuRe and partner of SEACAP 4 SDG, participated in a first working session with the project partners in order to present the main achievements of Med-EcoSuRe while focusing on what can be replicated and/or scaled up. The intervention focused on:

  •  Guidelines and action plans elaborated in order to establish and manage a living lab or an intermediation entity for the collaboration between academics, decision-makers and stakeholders, in order to support energy managers in planning and implementing innovative sustainable energy measures within university buildings;
  • Tools developed to plan and implement innovative and eco-sustainable energy retrofitting in university buildings;
  • Demonstration actions implemented including Photovoltaic power plants and a micro-grid platform intended to enhance the performance of the buildings and reduce their energy consumption;
  • Online collaboration platform created to disseminate the best practices, capitalize on the project findings, and ensure the gathering of information and cooperation among partners and stakeholders. This platform will be enriched with new members from SEACAP 4 SDG participating countries and will host an open dialogue with all relevant stakeholders on the financial mechanisms for building renovations.

SE(A)CAP will build on Med-EcoSuRe findings and will go beyond existing practices via focused training of relevant stakeholders in order to maximize the impact and sustainability of the cost-effective approaches and financial mechanisms for energy refurbishment to be proposed.
